About Us

Mungo’s Books for Dog People was founded in Calgary, Alberta in February, 2006.

As a professional dog trainer, I was frustrated by the distinct lack of quality dog training books available in Canada and decided to remedy that.

Using my bookseller’s background and dog trainer’s experience, I built a specialty bookshop that focuses on the latest research on dogs, humane training methods, and the best ways to live with our canine companions.

Mungo’s Books quickly became THE place in Canada to get great dog books, effective training tools, and very cool interactive toys.

Yes, we’re not just books! I constantly seek out new products that are unique, high-quality, and really work. I test them with real dogs, including my own, before I carry them, to make sure that they meet my high standards.

And when I can’t find what I’m looking for, I do it myself!  Check out our very own line of Snuffle Mats (foraging feeders), tug toys & more!

We have what you need to work and play with your dog. And we want you to make the most of the time you have together, so we will ship to you anywhere in Canada.

Thank you for supporting Canadian, supporting independent, and supporting us!

Leigh Sutherland, CPDT-KA

I am a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (www.ccpdt.org) with over 15 years of experience as a trainer and over 20 years in the book industry. My educational background is Anthropology, where I learned to study behaviour – a definite asset for a dog trainer.

I pursue extensive continuing education, attending many seminars and workshops each year, reading countless books, writing articles, and mentoring other trainers.

While I love teaching people to train their dogs, Mungo’s Books allows me to reach more people than I could as a trainer alone. The more we learn, the better we do for our dogs.

I use my coaching skills to volunteer with local children, coaching soccer teams at Chestermere United FC, where I also work in Planning & Development. And to keep it interesting, I play on the CUFC women’s team. Being the student makes me a better trainer!

I live a never-boring homeschooling life with my three boys and patient husband. Our family is rounded out by:
Sam – a Border Collie/Samoyed
Wren – a Brittany/Retriever
Booker – a little orange-and-white Border Collie
& a couple of small creatures who belong to my sons

Mungo

Mungo means “dear friend”, which is a fitting name for this lovely book company. But it means much more than that.

Mungo is an old Scottish name and St. Mungo is the patron saint of Glasgow, my hometown. Mungo was also the name of the rocking horse that I loved and had to leave behind when my family moved to Canada. That memory, along with the word’s meaning, made Mungo the name that would be bestowed upon my first dog.

Most importantly, Mungo was my once-in-a-lifetime dog – a beautiful, brilliant orange-and-white Border Collie – who dragged me into the world of dog training. Mungo learned without being taught, taught more than she learned, and gave everything she had along the way. Without her, there would have been no Mungo’s Books for Dog People.

Mungo was born in winter 1996, adopted on November 7th, 1998, and took her last breath in my arms on January 26th, 2012.

I wish a such a dear friend upon everybody.
